We are excited to share that our four Everyday Humanitarianism in Tanzania policy engagement briefs are now available in Kiswahili!

The briefs explore how ordinary people in Tanzania are not only the first to respond during crises but also continue to support those in need throughout prolonged emergencies. They examine how elites step in with personal resources, how disaster response can better reflect local realities, how refugees and host communities support each other under restrictive conditions, and how public perceptions of who deserves help shape everyday humanitarian action.

The reason for translating the policy briefs from English to Kiswahili is to ensure effective communication with stakeholders. While nearly all the people we engage with—academics, government officials, civil society activists—understand and use English, the dominance of Kiswahili in Tanzania means that many are more comfortable and receptive to policy advice communicated in Kiswahili. In addition, many Tanzanians touched by the issues we study may not be able to fully understand English-language materials. Providing these briefs in Kiswahili not only improves accessibility but also contributes to the growth and recognition of Tanzania’s national language.

The Kiswahili briefs will be distributed to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which deals with disaster management, as well as to regional, district, and ward leaders in our research areas—Dar es Salaam (all districts), Morogoro (Kilosa and Ifakara districts), and Kigoma (all districts)—so they can share the findings with local leaders and citizens. Details of the distribution will be discussed in our upcoming team meeting.

You can read and download all Kiswahili policy briefs in the “Reports” section of our website:
