The Citizen Features Esther Mlingwa's Work on Disaster Management

Esther Mlingwa, a PhD researcher for the EHTZ research project, recently published an article titled “Harnessing Humanitarianism for Disaster Management amidst El Niño” in Tanzania’s daily newspaper, The Citizen. In her article, Mlingwa sheds light on Tanzania's vulnerability to the impacts of El Niño due to its diverse geography and climate, stressing the crucial role of local communities in disaster management. She emphasizes the need to incorporate everyday humanitarianism into formal disaster management plans, recognizing the valuable knowledge and efforts of local actors. Despite the tendency of existing frameworks to sideline informal humanitarian responders, Mlingwa advocates for bridging the gap between formal and informal responders to construct a more resilient disaster management framework.
